Dreaming is communication with our own soul, the Universe, and the Deities we choose to align with. Dreams provide us with many possibilities to experience awareness in many levels. While dreaming, we are given instructive and practical insights into the spiritual, physical, and mental aspects of our lives.
Dreams can encourage us while we are engaged in the struggle to reach decisions about major life issues. We can become aware of patterns in our thoughts and actions that need to be altered. Dreams are the gateways through which the subconscious, intuitive parts of our minds, come in contact with something greater than ourselves.
One of the most basic and valuable tools you can develop for spiritual growth is lucid dreaming. The word lucid in this context refers to mental clarity, it is dreaming while knowing you are dreaming. This realization while in the dream state occurs when the dreamer notices that something is impossible or unlikely to occur in waking life. There are varying levels of awareness in lucidity. The higher levels bring awareness that everything being experienced is in your mind, that you are asleep and will awaken shortly. Lower level lucid dreamers arrive at a certain degree of awareness, but lack the total comprehension of events or reactions that come with higher states of lucidity.
Why would anyone want to have lucid dreams? The answer is, if you know that you are in a dream state, you are free, in principle, to do anything that is possible for you to conceive or imagine. You can face and challenge your fears and diffuse whatever is frightening you in a nightmare. You can practice creative problem solving, increase artistic inspiration, practice positive reinforcement when learning skills or attitudes being worked in waking life, and even accelerate physical healing.
Here are a few techniques that encourage lucid dreaming:
-Set your mind to awaken from dreams and recall them.
-Create a strong intent to recall. Tell yourself “Next time I’m dreaming, I want to remember that.”
-“I’m dreaming.” Say this little mantra, several times before going to sleep, especially if you feel yourself slipping into the half asleep state. Also, repeat this to yourself at various times during the day.
-Keep a Dream Journal. Have by your bedside a notebook and pencil, and immediately after awakening from a dream, quickly jot down any images, sounds, symbols, or words you can remember.
-Place a “dream bag” under your pillow. Dreams bags or pillows are filled with herbs, gemstones, essentials oils, and crystals that can help you not only to have lucid dreams, but to recall your dreams more accurately. You can make one yourself, or you can find a ready made one at: https://www.etsy.com/listing/167092239/oneira-glika-sweet-dreams-herbal-bag?ref=shop_home_active
-Throughout the day and at bedtime, visualize yourself becoming a lucid dreamer. Imagine yourself back in the dream you have just had, and see yourself recognizing it as a dream while you are experiencing it.
-Once in bed and relaxing into readiness for sleep, focus on creating the intent to lucid dream and repeat the mantra “I am dreaming” so that these are the last things you think about before falling asleep.
-Have a cup of mugwort tea before betime. Mugwort, among other herbs, can help bring on more clear, lucid dreams, and it also works beautifully for divination. I never go to bed without having my Dreamtime organic herbal tea blend, with mugwort and other herbs, and crystal infusions of Moonstone, Labradorite and several other gemstones. At first you may have trouble remaining asleep once you realize that you are having a lucid dream. Becoming lucid is exciting, but in order to remain asleep you have to suppress your emotions just enough to prevent losing one’s attention to the lucid dream experience.
It has been recorded that the Senoi people use lucid dreaming as a way to find answers to life’s perplexing questions by using the rules listed below:
-ALWAYS confront unpleasant or dangerous situations with courage, do not back down or run away.
-ALWAYS move towards pleasurable experiences in dreams.
-ALWAYS make your dreams have a positive outcome, and gain something useful and creative from it.
Practice those techniques over and over and before you realize, you will be lucid dreaming frequently. Next post we will discuss the art of Dream Incubation. Until then, have a wonderful Freya Day 🙂
